9/17/2019- The Secret of Monkey Island

Image taken from Steam

Hello and today I am covering a classic game, Secret of Monkey Island. For the record I played the Special Edition, so if there is any confusion on whether or not I got the legit experience, I technically did with the more modern version (If that is even correct statement). Another thing for the record is that the price of Monkey Island while I was writing the review was $9.99 on steam. On to the review. *This game is appropriate for all ages*

To go into this review, I must admit, I wasn’t even sure how in the world I was going to review a point and click game, especially one from ten (the special edition came out in 2009) (Technically approx. 30 years, because the original version came out in 1990) ago. Games sometimes don’t age well, sometimes opinions change of things, and sometimes things that are socially acceptable change. Point and click games, while fun, usually get the short end of the stick. One example of times changing is the nutrition heavy cannibals. Some might see that as a jab towards vegans modern day, while some might find it funny (myself included). So in all fairness (and seeing how I wasn’t born before and/or have memories of 1990 (because I still wasn’t born) so I can’t tell anyone whether or not some of that stuff would fly back then) I’ll do a ” is it inherently a good game or bad game” type of game review today.

Gameplay

This is a point and click adventure, and point and click is either love it or hate it type of game play, so theirs that. I personally love playing point and click games (not all point and click games though, some are just monotonous or just plain idiocy) and puzzle solving, so there is that.

Humor

This game is a very witty game, especially with the sword fighting, but my one complaint is the sword fighting RnG. I didn’t actually look into it too much, but sometimes with the sword fighting you can be grinding because you can’t get a certain line to pop up, so in turn, sometimes the humor gets monotonous because of waiting for a time that is comparative to forever. But other than that this game has hours upon hours of subjectively humorous dialogue.

Voice Acting

This game has decent voice acting. Sometimes it feels slightly apathetic, but it is still decent nonetheless. I might be having higher standards because of modern voice acting, so I’ll cut the game some slack.

Overall

Overall I would give this game a 6/10. The monotony I felt with this game sometimes was just too much, and sometimes the things you had to do were just too convoluted. I wouldn’t call this a bad game per se, I just wouldn’t call it a good game. I enjoyed myself for the most part, but I can faithfully say this game hasn’t aged well in my opinion. If you don’t have the nostalgia, I fell like this game might be a bust, if not for the humor. I would recommend it, but just for the experience. That’s it for now-

Jan 5th 2018- Battletoads

*Image is original artwork (also pulled from gamestop.com)
Hello, and today I am doing a review on Battletoads. You may be wondering hey, why the HUGE delay. I honestly forgot where I put my laptop in my room. Come when school starts up again I’ll probably find it in my locker or satchel. So you also now may be wondering what is he doing this on. My phone. So sorry if quality is bad. (*Post edit, halfway through I found my laptop.)

Battletoads is an old game by rare in which you play as Rash or Zit. It’s a old beat em up that is easily a classic. I recently beat it last week, and holy cow is it tough. But it is fun.

If you ask any 80’s through early 2000 kid about a beat ’em up, most will think about Battletoads. It has good graphics (For its time) and very solid gameplay. It is a very fun game, but, however there is a major bug that makes this game hard to beat completely (so I would recommend the Rare Replay version, as it fixes the bug and makes this game immensely easier) but still playable to the end (Keyterm end if playing non Rare Replay). This games gameplay is solid, and the music is addicting (a little too addicting, I got it stuck in my head) . This game is overall a pretty good game, so I would recommend this to everyone, but I wouldn’t recommend a completionist play through, but a beat it play through. Overall I would give this game a 3.5 out of 5. That’s all for now-

September 23rd 2017- Metroid Samus Returns review

Metroid Samus Returns*Image pulled from Nintendo

Last week Metroid Samus returns came out for the Nintendo 3DS. It is no secret that Metroid is one of my favorite series of all time. So when I came in I had extremely high expectations. I am extremely glad to say the Metroid 2 remake blew away my expectations and it is a much better game than I hoped. (I swear I do not work for Nintendo nor do I get paid to review their games, I just play a ton of Nintendo games) (*Warning, this reiew does contain spoilers, but no major spoilers, thankfully)Well on to the review.

Complaints (2)(These are minor/insignificant complaints) When I finished the game, I half hoped you would be able to play the original Metroid 2, but sadly, no. The only other complaint is that you have to get amibo’s and have an amibo reader to experience the game fully, but that’s really my only complaints. Still play or get the game though (legally).

Graphics- 10 out of 10-  When I saw this game on YouTube, I initially thought wow, this game doesn’t have the greatest graphics. But that was just an assumption that YouTube and how the game would look would be the same. That was mistake primero Uno. This game has amazing graphics, and I think that statement is an understatement. This game has some of the singlehandedly best graphics for a 3DS game.

Gameplay- 10 out of 10- When I heard the game has a ton of additions since Metroid 2, I was skeptic. But these additions are amazing. It’s extremely fun to mess with the 360 degree aiming, and the programming for the  360 degree aiming is impressive. Every Aeion ability gets better each time, along with useful. The great part is that the spider ball is finally back in a 2D Metroid game, and it isn’t an item that makes the game too easy. The only thing is when you teleport, it is implied that you can go places other than SR388. Also this game is sort of like Metroid Zero Mission where the game is longer than the original.

Sound/Music-10 out of 10)- When I first played the game(during the beginning, not the whole time) I thought they just reused the soundtrack from the original game. They did not. They revamped many (and I mean many) if not all of the sound track. My favorite is the final phase of the final boss.

Other things (Warning, some of this section is speculation, and some is spoilers in general. Don’t read this until after you play the game, or if you watch some random person play. Perferably the first. Then comment to see if you agree, disagree, or other)- I liked the games plot. But from the final boss, it makes super Metroid make complete sense and from the final cutscene, it shows there is either A) a Metroid Fusion remake coming out, B) a Super Metroid remake coming out, or C) both. (Spoiler) For the love of it they even showed a fully rendered x-parasite, and the transformation of the creature who would eventually possess Samus’s suit. They even have a Metroid Fusion Mode where you play with the suit on from fusion, and if that doesn’t scream WE ARE MAKING A METROID FUSION REMAKE, I do not know what does. But even from the final boss fight, you see basically what happened at the beginning of super Metroid.

Summary- This game is an extremely fun game. Although some of the boss fights are hard, this game is still incredibly fun. I would recommend this to everyone and anyone, and I would recommend for whoever is reading this to go and buy this game now. The only reason I would say not to buy it is if this is a decision between paying bills, food, or getting this game. But even then I would still recommend this game.

Final score- 10 out of 10

That’s all for now

August 21st, 2017- Metroid other M recommendation

With two new Metroid games just around the corner, I am here today to review Metroid the other M and recommend it to just about anybody. First of all I would like to say this game is both 3D and 2D at the same time. This offers for some very interesting gameplay mechanics, as you can go from a side-scrolling section to a completely explore-able area. Now on to the main chunk. If you like Metroid fusion, then you will either really love this game or hate it. This game in its core is how I’d like to say a re-imagining prequel.  Some people might be going “What in the world does that mean?”. Basically it feels like it was heavily inspired by Metroid Fusion, almost to the point of a remake (Which would be awesome if Nintendo made a remake for Metroid Fusion), but it is made in a way that the plot is completely different, the gameplay is extremely different, but it is extremely similar. I love this completely. This is a game in which its plot is one of its strongest points. Many people might not like this game (To my knowledge), but it is extremely fun. You even get to see bits of Metroid 2 and Super Metroid. This is also one of the few games where you even get to learn some of Samus’ past. That is why I give this game a 9.9 out of ten stars. So go play it, and get ready for Metroid Samus Returns, and that is all for now.

July 25th, 2017- Kid Icarus 3D remake review

Kid Icarus

After a really long hiatus, I am proud to review the 3D remake of Kid Icarus. (Sorry if this is one of my more sloppy works, it has been a while) Now before fans of the series go get their pitchforks and go,” Really, recommend Kid Icarus, that is basically giving a baby a hand grenade,” yes, that is what I’m doing after so long. This game is insanely hard, but this series has as much love from Nintendo like the Joker and Harley Quinn. But this game is insanely fun once you get past the wanting to throw your controller to the wall. On to why this game is so great.

Plot (5 out of 5)- In this classic, you play as Pit, an angel from Greek mythological times, trying to save Palutena, the goddess of light, from imprisonment from Medusa, goddess of darkness. Pit is a young angel who can’t fly, and one day Medusa turned all angels but him into stone because he was a crippled angel. This is one of the darker plots of Nintendo, so overall I give it a A+.

Difficulty (-5 out of 5, aka difficult like there is no tomorrow)- In this game falling means instant death, getting hit too many times means death, and you have to start the stage all over if you die. To be completely honest, the reason it is so difficult is the first level. You start out in the underworld, and guess where the hardest enemies are. They put Reapers left and right, but to be completely honest, if you beat the first level, the rest of the game is a breeze.

Game play (5 out of 5)- The game mechanics are overly simple. All it is is jump, platform, shoot, pray you don’t get killed, duck occasionally (Do not do this on clouds, this can easily get you killed) and occasionally switch to hammer to free centurions during fortresses. That is all there is to it.

Summary- Kid Icarus is a fun classic you can easily get from Nintendo on the 3DS. I would highly recommend it, and overall I would give it a five out of five. If you can beat it, then any hard game might become a lot easier. That is all for today.

May 11th 2017- Super Meatboy recommendation

Warning, do not play this game if you are easily offended, or a kid(without parents permission, so parents, play it first). But what is it with little kids playing games not intended for their age group. Also this can be a rage inducing game, so don’t direct your anger at me if you “accidentally” or purposefully throw your controller against your screen or punch your computer screen.  Other than that, have fun. -P.S. One of the games soundtracks songs does have a vulgar name, and it does feature you going to the underworld for a while, so that is why I have to give this a warning Sticker. I would say if anything it is rated T. Also the games antagonist doesn’t have a fully appropriate name.

Today I am going to recommend a game called Super Meat Boy. Super MeatBoy is a quick paced platformed where you play as Meatboy (or one of the other unlock-able characters in the game) who’s girlfriend has been kidnapped by the games antagonist. This game makes you feel both nostalgia and rage at the same time, mostly for the fact it feels old school, but isn’t. It can be next to impossible to beat for most people (except me, no, I’m not bragging, this is just my favorite type if game), let alone get 100%.

Plot (100 out of 100 and 50 out of 100)- This game has an extremely easy to follow plot that is not hard to follow at all.  For that reason, I’m giving both a 100 and a 50, because it it has a plot that doesn’t make you confused, it’s cut and paste what happens, so for simplicity I give it a 100. The 50 part is this game has no complexity, and I personally like complex plots, but since my opinion is not of every ones, I’m giving it two grades, just to be fair.

Music- (100 out of 100) – I would give the music to this game an A+. I feel as if its one of the best things about the game because you will be stuck on many levels, so it’s at least gotta give you good music. My favorite song is the one of the underworld, but I do try to keep these reviews G to PG, so I can’t say the name. Look it up if you want to, but do it of your own accord. (This is so I don’t get in trouble if you get in trouble, so please don’t blame me if you look up the song name).

Gameplay (90 out of 100)- This games gameplay is repetitive (mostly for the fact of what type of game it is), but it constantly adds new elements to not make it monotonous (It’s not like running you over with an 18-wheeler, it gives you new elements at a steady pace). Most of it is figuring out what to do by yourself, but it is almost painfully obvious what each thing does. It even some times fires what each new mechanic does at you.

Rage inducing ((this scale is the more rage inducing it is, the lesser the score, just to make a game not a perfect 10 out of ten where it makes you want to throw the console out the window, also adds and additional 100 just in case of being too rage inducing) 35 out of 100) – This game can make you madder than the mad hatter, buts it not from being a crappy game. This game is legitimately hard and frustrating from good game play. Although this can make you go, “I should’ve made that,” it is still almost always the player who messed up.

Graphics-(75 out of 100)- The graphics of this game are good, but not great. I would say the games graphics are mediocre, but then again this game was released in 2011. So 75.

All in all, I would give this game an eight star rating (7.9 and 2/3 to be exact)(that’s the average of the two scores put together, from one category having two scores. Ones 8 and 1/3 and the other is 7.5) This amazing game is 15 dollars, so go check it out for yourself. Until next time- The Firemoon Gamer

May 4th (May the Forth be with you)- Classic Game recommendation- Megaman Zero

MegaMan Zero is a game I love extremely much, and as I was playing it, I decided to do a review/ recommendation for it. Megaman Zero is a 2D platformer for the Gameboy advance, with surprisingly good graphics for its time.  This game could be mistaken for a game from today if it wasn’t for being on the gameboy. This game was somewhat ignored for its time, as the Megaman series as a hole was on the decline. Although this is a technical review, I really want Megaman as a series to come back, as it was (and is) a really good series.

The music is different for every location, so you have more music for every location that adds more replay ability.  The story and plot may be confusing if you never played Megaman X, but it will be even more confusing if you haven’t played Megaman at all. At times it can be difficult, but for the most part (at least for me) it is pretty easy.

It can give some people a hard time to get an A rank on all missions (don’t worry if it does, it defiantly gives me a hard time), but it is even harder to get 100 percent. I would say level up your skills for weapons as fast as you can, because it makes the game a whole lot easier if you do. If you can get past the first two bosses, you should be able to beat the game (key term should, please don’t get mad at me if you can’t), but you should save regularly. Try to explore as much as you humanly can, but other than that, good luck.

I personally would give this game a 5 out of 5 star rating. Thank you for taking your time to read this, and good bye for now. -The Firemoon gamer

Megaman 2 boss guide- April 29th, 2017

Warning incomplete, Enter at own risk Would be apperciated if you put how to kill each boss in comments to get this done faster, also names

Megaman 2 has no boss killing glitches, but it is an easier game than Megaman (Boss wise) Here is how to kill each of them. (BTW all but two bosses is weak to Megamans megablaster)

  1. Airman- Air man is the weakest to megamans megablaster, but he is also weak to bubble lead
  2. Crashman-  is weak to Airmans item
  3. The Alien (true final boss)- This thing will be healed by all of your weapons except for bubble lead. He is tough, but if you attack, then dodge as much as you can, it will probably be easy. Makes a mostly useless item finally useful.

Megaman 1 Boss Guide – April 27th, 2017

This is a game I would personally recommend to anyone, beginner, veteran, age 3, age 60, anyone. It is a little difficult, but is the easiest Megaman game. If you want to start to play the Megaman series, play them in order. -The Firemoon Gamer.

Today I am doing a boss guide for Megaman 1. It is a game where all you do is walk, jump, and shoot. That is all there is to it. I am going to highlight all the bosses’ weaknesses. But before that, I am going to highlight the cutter boomerang glitch.

The cutter boomerang glitch is an oversight: with cuttermans item, the cutter boomerang, you can deal infinite damage. It is where you select the cutter boomerang and when it hits an enemy or boss, continuously mash select to deal damage infinitely. This glitch/oversight happens because the cutter boomerangs stays out of the field indefinitely until the boomerang goes back to you. When you press select, the boomerangs despawns because the game is paused, then re-spawns back into play when you press select. When this happens, if it is on an enemy, it deals out damage again, mostly because the damage dealt to the enemy is already given, but since the boomerang spawned is “new”, it can deal damage to the same enemy over and over again. So essentially, you could theoretically deal infinite damage.

1. Gutsman- Gutsman stage should be the first stage you tackle, as he is the weakest to the mega blaster, but if you don’t do him first, he is weak to bombmans power.

2. Cutterman – Cutterman is weak to Gutsman’s item, so if you pick up the rocks in the arena and throw them at him; he should die in two hits.

3. Elecman-By now you should have the cutter boomerang, and guess what Elecmans weakness is. Even without the cutter boomerang glitch, he is extremely weak to the cutter boomerangs.

4.Iceman is weak to elecmans power, and it gets him defeated quickly.

5. Bombman- Bombman is weak to firemans power, so just defeat him with that, or the boomerang

6. Fireman- Fireman is weak to icemans power, but the cutter boomerang glitch is perfectly valid.

5. Bombman- Bombman is weak to firemans power, so just defeat him with that, or the boomerang, which is good practice for what is coming up.

7 Yellow Devil- The yellow devil is what one could literally be called an actual devil. He is immune to mostly everything, but use the cutter boomerang glitch and you won’t deal with hours of swearing and cursing at the devil.

8 Megaman Clone- Just use the boomerang glitch again, but his weakness is the mega buster

9. Machine bubble- this fight is hard. But in all honesty, just use gutmans item, and then use the mega buster, because that is what it is weak to. Also Elecmans item, but megabuster is faster and more reliable in this case.

10 Dr. Wily- Dr. Wily is weak to the mega buster, firemans power, boomerang, and elecmans power.  Hold off using elecmans power during stage one, because it does double damage stage 2 (if you’ve played megaman before you know what I mean)
